Course Outline

The procedure of numerical modeling of geo-structures in FLAC3D will be discussed in this course. The course starts with the introduction of computational geotechnics and geomechanics and description of different steps required in the numerical modeling. Consequently, the numerical modeling procedure will be fully discussed in FLAC3D. Different aspects including geometry development, constitutive modeling, property assignment, boundary conditions, analysis procedure, and results extraction will be discussed.

Topics covered include:

• Introduction to numerical modeling in geotechnics and geomechanics
• Introduction to finite element, finite difference, and distinct element modeling technics
• Introduction to modeling in FLAC3D
• Analysis procedure in FLAC3D
• Extrusion technic for 3D geometry development
• Introduction to FISH programming language
• Structural elements in FLAC3D
• Interface and attachment of different zones in FLAC3D
• Groundwater modeling in FLAC3D
• Practical examples and models developed in FLAC3D
